Louisville Slugger Maple Wood Bat: MLBM9YC Youth

by I hate metal bats - Jan 12, 2011

Pros: Bat is nicely balanced so my 8 yr old son handles it well. Good pop off the barrel. Great for training and game use. Has not broke a bat in the last 2 years.

Cons: Like any other wood bat, its prone to break. If your child is not disciplined at the plate and is used to a metal bat using a wood bat will be an issue at first.

Review Summary

Louisville Slugger Maple Wood Bat: MLBM9YC Youth
4.428571 based on 14 ratings. 14 user reviews.

This is the Louisville Slugger Youth Maple wood bat. Louisville Slugger uses professional grade, hand-picked Maple to make this bat. The unique grain structure of this wood prevents the barrel from flaking. The M9 Maple is also kiln dried for optimum moisture content. The pro cupped end is ideal for controlling the weight for maximum bat speed and durability. Maple Wood bats are a stronger wood than the standard Northern White Ash models. This bat features a 2 ¼ inch barrel in diameter. This bat is great for practice or games. Many high schools and colleges are now taking batting practice with wood bats and now even the younger kids are doing this too. You can use this bat for practice instead of your high dollar metal bat. Practice with a wood bat has proven to be very beneficial. My son is 13 and about 102 pounds and currently swinging a 19 oz metal bat.his batting coach said he should get a wood bat for the winter in the cage, but he said to get a 32 inch 29 oz. I dont think he would be able to swing that. what are your recommendations?I would think something lighter to start , then build up to it. High school is next year and its a -3 drop then. What do you suggest and is maple the better choice for less breakage? thanks. Jeff

If the coach recommends a 32 inch, the lightest we will be able to get for him would be the BamBooBat Bamboo Wood Bat: HBBBY Black Youth, its made of bamboo which is very durable, and is approximately a -5 to -6 which would put him around 26 ounces. Or the Mizuno Maple Wood Bat: MZM271YLL Youth which is an approximate -6 to -8 ratio, which would put it around 24 ounces, it is Maple, which again is pretty durable.
