Pros: Bought this bat due to the new bat restrictions being placed at all levels and figured it would be a great transition bat for my 13 year old to BBCOR bats. He found it to have great balance, characteristics of both a metal bat for durability and a composite bat for great pop in the sweet spot. He's a line drive hitter but has hit a few bombs to the deeper fences. Great bat for a contact hitter.
Cons: Sweet spot is not as big as the full composites. (But is still a great bat or equal when compared to more expenseve bats!) Not a well known bat so getting full "buy in" from a youth is important when all his friends are swinging those more expensive Combat, Easton or Demarini bats.
Review Summary
4.7 based on 40 ratings. 40 user reviews.
The MSB2 features the USSSA 1.15 Stamp and is approved for play in 2012! Until last season, Marucci was always known for their wood bats. Then the CAT 5 burst onto the scene and became one of the top aluminum bats on the market. This year, Marucci raises the stakes again with unbelievable new technology. Through endless field testing with the top players in America, Marucci discovered that vibration in the top hand is the most common complaint amongst amateur baseball players. Marucci has acquired a patented new anti-vibration technology that blows the competition away. They hired noted bat scientist Dr. Daniel A. Russell to do some lab testing against the top bats on the market. The results were shocking. He found that the vibration dampening rate on the CAT 5 is 5.6 times higher than the next closest competitor! For the player, this means that they can step up to the plate worry-free with one thing on their mind; blasting one over the fence! This is literally the smoothest swinging bat ever produced. Experience the difference of this one-piece bat made from the most responsive alloy in the industry. Marucci: Game Tested. Player Approved. The Marucci CAT 5 carries a Full Twelve (12) Month Manufacturer's Warranty. Free Shipping!

Pros: Bought this bat due to the new bat restrictions being placed at all levels and figured it would be a great transition bat for my 13 year old to BBCOR bats. Pros: Bought this bat for my son because it was the only bat that qualified for his middle school in my price range. I can't tell you how pleased I am with this bat. He loves it. He has had the best games of his life with this bat. It is well balanced and has absolutely no sting so he does not hesitate to try and smash the ball. His coach says that he swings as if he is hitting a beach ball instead of a baseball. He just steps up and kills it because he has no fear of a sting if he misjudges. Get this bat, you won't be sorry.
Cons: NONE...
Pros: My son says he really likes the feel of the bat. It appears to have pretty good "pop" as well.
Cons: Unfortunately, he has only used it a short time and the grip tape is bunching up at the knob. I wish I had a local rep that would repair under warranty. My son can't afford to go without the bat to send it off for repair.
Pros: Fantastic pop! This bat should be $250+, but is only $180! The Cat5 has good grip, large sweet spot, and a sweet design!
Cons: ABSOLUTELY NONE!!!!!!!
Pros: this bat is amazing i got it and i felt like i could swing as hard as i want because when you hit the ball you feel nothing. just because its not expensive doesn't mean its bad, marucci cares about their customers
Cons:
Pros: Great pop...good balance...My son is using this bat in travel ball and loves it!!!
Cons: None so far...
Pros: Best bat ever!!!!!!!!!!! Has lots of pop, and since it has the anti-vibration thingy, i dont even need to wear batting gloves
Cons:
Pros: Bought this bat for my son and he used it all year. In state all-star tournament he hit 3 bombs. I now have one excited 12 year old.
Cons: End cap came off at district tournament but I glued it in before the state tournament. My son did not want to wait on a replacement.
Pros: This bat definitely lives up to expectations. Good pop. Balanced swing weight. No sting. My son hit his first home run the second time out with this bat. Will buy another one for his younger brother.
Cons: Not sure about the white color. Grip doesn't look durable, but these are minor issues.
Pros: this bat is the best bat on the market i recently got a drop 5 and it hits great
Cons: there is not enough grip tape
Pros: Son just got the bat, hit a stand up triple last night to RF 300 ft, fence. Great balance, great transition bat, sweet looking, nice grip and great pop!!!
Cons: None yet, wish we would have got it sooner, see this bat at a lot of USSSA tourneys this season...must mean something!
Pros: Excellent pop and great sticky grip with no sting. Lighter kids will really appreciate the extra distance they get from this bat - I know mine did. 9U Travel Team Mgr
Cons: None
Pros: I bought the 30/22 for my 10 year old. He's tall and strong for his age. He's had it for a couple of months and absolutely loves it. He had been using a -10 Easton, and I was concerned that he'd sacrifice too much bat speed moving to the -8. It hasn't been a problem. The bat is very well balanced; my son gets it around really well; and the ball jumps off it.
Cons: None so far.
Pros: My son was sad to hear he needed a new bat due to the recent regulation changes. Right out of the box, he began crushing baseballs. He loves it! It is heavier than his old bat, but the weight is distributed evenly and he actually says that this bat feels lighter. The thicker grip/handle is a big plus. The free shipping allowed me to pay for the 3 day shipping. The bat arrived 1 day early! VERY SATITSFIED.
Cons: none
Pros: This bat is UNBELIEVABLE. Marucci continues to make fantastic aluminum bats. My son is 13, and he hits BOMBS with this bat. Next year, we will go with the Marruci Black -5 bat. I LOVE MARUCCi
Cons: ABSOLUTELY NONE(:
Pros: Great pop, very balanced and light. Zero vibration...really allows you to go after it!! As good as any alloy bat out there.
Cons: Grip wears quick
Pros: Balanced, Good Power, Easy to Swing
Cons: Bat broke 2 weeks after warranty was up, Knob cracked and fell off, Can sting when hit wrong
Pros: My 13 year old son tried a demo of this bat and loves the pop.
Cons: The bat is still new but the end cap is already coming off.
Pros: My son used borrowed this bat from a teammate for batting practice and it has good pop. The bat is super light and my son used the 31/23 -8 bat and it felt like his 18 oz Easton S1.
Cons: None
Pros: This bat doesn't chip like the marucci black and I love to use it .
Cons: NONE.(:

Cons: NOTHING
Pros: every thing
Cons: nuthin
Pros: Amazing POP, very balanced bat, easy to swing!
Cons: None as of yet!
Pros: The minute I felt this bat I could feel how well balanced it was. My son (12) told me it felt lighter than his 31/22, its a 31/23. He has had only one game with it so what I can say is it sounds different and the ball comes off with more pop or speed. I would rap this up with you cannot beat the price for this product. We can only see how it holds up! Anyone else I speak with swears by them!
Cons: None
Pros: great pop and everything is great
Cons: none... :)
Pros: Good pop. Average size sweet spot. Very balanced.
Cons: Not enough sweet spot, could use another 3/4 inch of full size barrel before taper.
Pros: A lot of pop, balanced
Cons: NONE
Pros: Smooth balance weight. Ball flies off the barrell, even off end of the bat. No sting on hands if jammed. Light and easy to swing. Cost is very reasonbale. It is easily comparable to Louisville Slugger Exogrid2 but nearly a $100 cheaper.
Cons: Bat is made in China. Other than that it is a great bat.
Pros: So far the kids on our team love the bat. They have only used it for batting practice so far but all feedback has been great.
Cons: None yet... we seem to need more though
Pros: Great bat! Classic look with simple color scheme. Big sweet spot with good pop.
Cons: Over-priced!
Pros: good poP
Cons: Bat cracked In 2 parts
Pros: I am 10 years old, 5’2â€, 112 lbs and got the 30â€/22 oz (-8) Cat 5 for Christmas. This is a good looking bat with great balance, good “ping†and a nice sweet spot. It swings lighter than my -9 rival and I would highly recommend this bat.

Ask QuestionI am a power hitter and I am 5'0", 111 pounds. Would the Marucci CAT 5 or Marucci Black be better?
Asked by bomber on Apr 27, 2012
Power hitters typically prefer a one-piece bat and contact hitters typically prefer two-piece designs. With that being said, the Marucci CAT 5 is a one-piece alloy design that works great for power hitters and the Marucci Black is a two-piece hybrid design that works great for contact hitters. If you are a power hitter, I would suggest going with the Marucci CAT 5.

Is this a big barrel bat?
Asked by Bkosk23 on Apr 09, 2012
Yes, the Marucci MSB2 would be considered a big barrel at 2 5/8 inches. For more bat information feel free to contact our customer service at 1-866-321-2287.

I have a 12 year old son, 5' tall, 83 lbs. Looking for right size bat.
Asked by JT on Mar 29, 2012
Based on his height and weight, I would suggest going with a 30 inch bat. As far as weight is concerned, it is generally recommended to move up an ounce or two each time you buy a new bat. I would probably move up a couple ounces from the bat he is currently using.
Billy Expert · Mar 29, 2012
I am considering a cat5 for my 8 yr old he is 4ft 9 80 lbs. What is the most solid all around size and make in this brand?
Asked by kcgin34 on Mar 27, 2012
Based on his height and weight, a 30 inch 22 ounce model would be the best option.
Tyler Expert · Mar 27, 2012
Last year, my son used a 31/19 bat. He's 5'6" and pretty strong. I was wondering If I should get him the -8 version?
Asked by Mark on Mar 22, 2012
Moving to a -8 will depend on what feels best to the player. It's recommended to move up in weight each year to help build muscle, creating more power. Have him swing a -8 to see if he feels comfortable and if the bat speed is consistent a -8 will work for him.

is the cat 5 senior league msb2 approved for play in babe ruth league?
Asked by jv on Mar 20, 2012
Depends on your division. If you're in the 13-15 year old division it is 100% legal. If you're in the 16-18 division, it is not, because you have to use a -3 adult bat in that division.
Tyler Expert · Mar 20, 2012
I am looking for a bat for my 13 year old to use in both USSSA tournaments and Junior Little League tournaments. Would this bat be legal for both? Do you have any suggestions for other bats that are legal in both leagues?
Asked by Vokal MOM on Mar 15, 2012
Based on the information I have, this bat would be legal for both. It is an all alloy bat, so it doesn't need to meet BBCOR standards for Junior Little League and can have any drop. It also has the new USSSA stamp making it legal for play in USSSA tournaments as well. Since rules do change from league to league, I would suggest double checking with your league official just to make sure.

is this bat leagal in ussa torniments
Asked by Rich on Mar 02, 2012
Yes this Marucci Cat 5: MSB2 features the USSSA Stamp and is legal for use in USSSA tournaments depending on what barrel size is required for the age your son or daughter is playing in.

Does the bat have the year of manufacture and "approved for pony" per 2012 pony rule changes?
Asked by dylan on Feb 27, 2012
This bat is legal for use in Pony League. It will not have "approved for pony league" printed on the bat, since the barrel size is 2 5/8 inches. Only bats with a barrel diameter of 2 1/4 in are required to have "approved for pony league" stamped on the bat.
Jennifer Expert · Feb 27, 2012
Is the Cat 5 approved for USSSA play? Is it stamped with a BPF 1.15 rating?
Asked by Allen on Feb 24, 2012
Yes, the MSB2 does have the new USSSA stamp for 2012. The MSB2 is an all alloy bat with a large sweet spot, durable barrel and has been a popular -5 bat.
Kris Expert · Feb 24, 2012
14 year old - 5'4" and 110 lbs, I believe that am looking at the drop 5. Have heard conflicting reports about whether or not to look at a 30/25 or a 31/26. Is there much of a difference in these two sizes? Any advice?
Asked by Ballfan on Feb 10, 2012
You can determine the best size by checking out our size chart at http://www.justbats.com/products/baseball%20bats~youth%20big%20barrel/.

Whats better the cat 5 or the black
Asked by dom on Feb 06, 2012
Both bats are very good options. The Cat 5 is an all one piece alloy bat and the Black is a two piece bat. These bats have great pop and large sweet spots.
KG Expert · Feb 07, 2012
Do you think is better then the rival.
Asked by jc on Feb 02, 2012
This will be more of a personal preference. Both are good bats.
KG Expert · Feb 02, 2012
Our league is not allowing two-piece bats nor composite bats. Is the CAT 5 a composite bat?
Asked by Mike on Jan 30, 2012
No, this is a one piece all alloy model.
John Expert · Jan 30, 2012
14 year old - 5'2" and 100 lbs, likes the Cat5 but we don't know whether to go with -8 or -5 for his final youth/senior league spring season. He needs to work up to -3 for high school summer ball in 5 months. Hit with -8 last spring and wood bats in fall league (which he could handle but not easily). Any recommendations?
Asked by Max on Jan 26, 2012
You do want to slowly move them in weight as they get older, but you dont want the weight of the bat to effect their mechanics. I would recommend going with the -5, just because it will help prepare him for high school when he gets to a -3.
Ryan Expert · Jan 26, 2012
is this bat 1.15bpf
Asked by Dad7 on Jan 24, 2012
Yes, this bat would feature the USSSA BPF 1.15 stamp on the bat.

My son hit a 29 19 Rival last year and I am thinking the the 29 21 for him this year. He is 10. What would you recommend?
Asked by Flames4 on Jan 10, 2012
It really depends on his strength. The CAT 5 is lightweight and very balanced, so if he is a strong hitter the 29/21 would be fine.

Can this bat be used in Pony Baseball
Asked by So So on Dec 29, 2011
Yes. This is approved for pony leagues.
KG Expert · Dec 29, 2011
my son was swinging a 30-20 gen x very well last year we have tried the new voodoo 29-21 not happy with it, the claim to the cat 5 is it swings lighter how would it compare to these bats weight wise? dont know whether to get a 30-22 or a 29-21? Thanks
Asked by CHM on Dec 26, 2011
The Cat5 would swing lighter than the Voodoo. As to the size to go with, I generally don't recommend going down in length, because how fast boys grow. Depending on your son's age and size, the 30-22 would be a good one, because the Cat5 is more balanced.
Linda Expert · Dec 27, 2011
If he did well with a 30-20 gen X, then he would probably do well with a 30-22 in cat 5, because of its balanced swing weight.

my 11 year old has been using a 29-19 oz bat will adding 2 oz in weight be too much for him?
Asked by mark6 on Nov 28, 2011
If he is a pretty strong kid and is handling the 29-19 pretty easily,he would be ok. But if he is smaller, that 2 ounces can be a lot. But keep in mind the Cat 5 has a nice balance so it swings light.

So, this will not be eligible for usage in 2012 due to a rule change, or is it eligible but, it is missing the sticker?
Asked by jake on May 03, 2011
This bat is eligible, but in most leagues, the bats will have to have the USSSA and 1.15 BPF stamp on them. This bat does not have that on it. The 2012 models will have them.
Brett Expert · May 03, 2011
u think the cat 5 for senior league will have a stamp on it for next year but they just didnt put the stamp on yet??? cause i hope they be able to be used next year

The 2011 Cat 5’s do not have the stamps on them. In most leagues they might not be able to be used next year if the league mandates that the stamps are on the bats. The 2012 Cat 5’s will have the stamps on them.
